Red Shouldered Hawk

Along the canal at Shark Valley. A Red Shouldered Hawk plops down into the canal and starts grappling with a snake. It’s quite a show. After a minute or two the hawk flies off with its meal. This is the best of the photos.

Red Blooms

I don’t know what these are called but they were gorgeous.

Blue Heron Landscape

Another image from the rainy morning, this time from near the end of the Anhinga Trail. A Great Blue Heron perches regally on top of mangroves, silhouetted against a background of majestic storm clouds from the morning’s showers.

Everglades Storm

I made this photo earlier on the same morning as the Anhinga Trail pic I posted yesterday.

This storm was dramatic in appearance but not violent. There was no rotation or lightning. The air over the sawgrass was extremely humid and the clouds on the edge of the storm’s gust front extended almost to the ground. It was quite a sight.

Stormy Day On the Anhinga Trail

Happy new year.

Before Winter set in there was a morning with particularly beautiful weather in Everglades National Park. First I caught the sun rising through fog at Long Pine Key (see earlier photos on this blog). Then I was able to make some good images of a rainstorm as it passed over the sawgrass prairie near the park entrance. Finally I drove to Royal Palm and the Anhinga Trail. The light was great and you can see the retreating storm clouds in the background here.

The Anhinga Trail is known for its wildlife, but it’s also an excellent place for landscape photography if you can be there after a morning storm.
