Nesting Ospreys At Flamingo

A pair of Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus), one of whom is eating a piece of fish, in their nest in the Flamingo section of Everglades National Park, Florida. WATERMARKS WILL NOT APPEAR ON PRINTS OR LICENSED IMAGES. (Jonathan Gewirtz jonathan@gewirtz.net)

This pair of ospreys (the second bird is barely visible behind the first) are nesting on top of a pole that was put up for them next to the boat ramps in the Flamingo section of Everglades National Park, Florida. They were obviously accustomed to being near humans.

Floatplane Landing Near Downtown Miami

Saw this as I was crossing the William Powell bridge. Stopped in time to get a few images. The plane is based at the marina on the western end of Virginia Key, immediately adjacent to the end of the bridge. You can get an interesting view of the plane taking off or landing if you happen to be on the bridge at the time.

Miami Street Photos

The Calle Ocho Street Carnival is a big annual festival in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. The city blocks off a long section of SW 8th Street (“Calle Ocho”) and tens of thousands of people show up to enjoy the food, music and party atmosphere. It is a diverse and mellow crowd and a cornucopia for people-watching and photography.

Fisheating Creek

Cypress forest. The water’s reddish tint comes from tannins that are produced naturally by decaying vegetation.

Sisal Pond

This is one of a series of “borrow pits” that were used as sources of fill for building the main road through Everglades National Park. Pine Glades Lake is another borrow pit. Once incidental, they are now among the park’s prized attractions with their wildlife and sunset views.
